First, for those that don't know, what is scripting? Scripting is just a way to automate getting information to and from your computer (and other computers). Ths simplest form of scripting is batch files (MS-DOS anybody?), e.g. at the windows command prompt type "echo Hello World" (without the "") and "Hello World" will be displayed. That is the simplest form of script. Windows PowerShell is an automation technology for Microsoft Windows operating systems that provides scripting capabilities comparable to batch files, but with a greater range of supported features. Screenshot #1 shows the PowerShell 2.0 console (where you can manually type in script commands) and the simplest command (they're called "cmdlet"s) example "get-host" shows that we're running Windows PowerShell 2.0. Rather than enter commands individually, it makes sense to make a file containing them. The Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE) exists for this purpose. Screenshot #2 shows the ISE. Top pane shows the currently loaded file - in this case pipe.ps1 - and shows a simple 1-line script. The script demonstrates the very useful PIPES feature of PowerShell 2.0. The script quite simply lists, in size order, files in c:\windows with a size of >200KB. By default, no permission is provided to run the scripts hence it fails. This is shown in the middle pane. Its fixed by typing "Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned" in the command line pane (the bottom pane). Screenshot #3 shows the script running successfully with the results shown in the middle pane. This is a very powerful administrators tool. MS-DOS batch files have come a long way!
