DivX is the most popular MPEG4 video codec. It is generally used by all people who like to distribute videos / movies on the internet. So, it is the codec they usually rip a DVD into. The main advantage of DIVX is that the video quality is maintained to the maximum while the file sizes are small. It gives one of the best compressions available. DIVX is also supported by many CD / DVD players. It is because, that DIVX can easily be implemented in the hardware. DivX Codec is available as a freeware. But DivX Pro Codec needs to be paid. Divx pro codec offers higher performance, especially on a Hyper Threaded, dual core or dual CPU systems. HD conversion at up to 1080p resolution is also supported in the pro version only. Divx Pro also gives you a DivX Converter which is a small program, which can be used to convert any video into a DIVX video easily. Drag and drop the video and the conversion are easy, and not much complicated like the DIVX Author. So, for conversion of multiple file, DivX Converter is easier than DIVX Author. DIVX Player is a small player, which can play any DIVX file. But the player need not be installed. Only DIVX codec is necessary. You can use Windows Media Player or Media Center for playing the file. Just rename *.DIVX to *.AVI OR open *.DIVX in Windows Media Player. DIVX is similar to XVID. But XVID is a freeware and an open source program. Any DIVX can be played with XVID, but the video quality / features may be compromised in case of contents with advanced DIVX features, menus, etc. There is no specific audio compression (or codec) available for DIVX. It usually uses mp3 or AAC (which can store 6 or more channel audio). So, compressing and viewing an HD content is really easy for DIVX codec.
