No external SMSC or web gateways are used, you send SMS from your SIM-card to any mobile phone in the world. The software has many useful capabilities such as sending Flash and WAP Push SMS, instant notification on incoming SMS, support of long (concatenated) SMS, understanding of non-Latin (UNICODE) characters, sending USSD commands (to check the balance and order the SMS packets).
