GiliSoft File Lock is a file and folder protection tool for Windows. It allows you to password-protect most files and folders on your system to prevent other users from opening them. When you first launch Gilisoft File Lock, the application will ask you to create a master password. You will be asked to type in this password every time you launch the application. One thing I didn't like is that you can't use special symbols in your passwords; you are limited to alphanumeric characters. I like secure passwords, as alphanumeric characters are the first ones to be cracked. From within the application, you can carry out three different types of file/folder protection. You can deny access to a file, hide it, or prevent other people from modifying files. There are three different categories within the app that allow you to use these modes. It is very easy to do, too. You simply select the file or folder that you want and click on the "Lock" button. In my testing, files were effectively protected when locked. I got an error saying I didn't have the necessary permissions to access the file. The latest version of this app reviewed on this site was Gili File Lock 3.2. A lot has happened since then. For starters, the user interface has been streamlined and made to look way better. Now, there is a new type of operation which allows you to "write-protect" files. Another important change is that when you set your master password, you are asked for an e-mail address in case you lose your password.
